It is no secret that divorce is expensive and this is even truer in cases that involve conflict. Contested divorces are those in which the couple does not agree to all terms. During the divorce process, these issues must be resolved and that can become costly. The average cost of a contested divorce in Texas is $15,600, which is a small fortune for many people. Fortunately, there are ways you can reduce this amount so your divorce costs you as little as possible.
Set Goals
You should never accept certain terms because you just want to get the divorce over with, as you could be forfeiting your rights. On the other hand, you also do not want to spend thousands of dollars fighting tooth-and-nail over something that will not be that important to you further down the road. Set goals for yourself early on in the process. This will allow you to determine what is most important to you so you can focus on fighting for those terms, and not those that will ultimately not mean as much to you in the end.
Consider Mediation
During mediation, you and the other side will meet with a neutral third party mediator. The mediator’s only job is to foster communication and compromise between you and your spouse so you can reach an agreement. Mediators do not give legal advice and they do not make any final decisions. Mediation is much quicker than going to a divorce trial, and it is much cheaper, too.
Keep Your Emotions in Check
Divorce is an emotional process and there is just no way around that. You will become emotional, but it is important to try and remain calm in certain situations. Heading into mediation sessions feeling argumentative is not productive, and constantly arguing with your spouse during litigation will only extend the process and make it more costly. Remain calm, even if it means allowing your attorney to do most of your speaking for you.
Keep Your Attorney Fees Low
Working with a family lawyer is worthwhile even though it does have a cost attached to it. Just like other parts of the divorce process, there are ways to lower these costs, too. Many lawyers charge for every email and phone call they have to answer. Instead of emailing your lawyer every time you have a question, create a list so you can ask them all at once.
Additionally, unless your lawyer tells you they need original copies of important documents, always give them a copy. If you have to go back to them and ask for original documents, such as your tax returns, the lawyer will probably charge you to send them.
